Comunidad Sol
Comunidad Sol is a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization created, led, and composed of young women and men of Maya displaced in Ohio, who are directly affected by the injustices faced by our peoples. We are grandchildren of survivors of the genocide in Guatemala (1980-1983). Founded in 2023, our organization accompanies community processes and seeks to establish a narrative of our own in response to criminalization, invisibility, and exclusion faced by Maya communities in Ohio, as well as to raise awareness of the true reasons behind forced migration.
Mission
To organize and mobilize Maya communities through building solidarity, community dialogue, linguistic justice, and leadership development among youth, women, Indigenous LGBTIQ+ communities, and other vulnerable groups.
Vision
A future where Maya Peoples in the diaspora can organize themselves with dignity and autonomy, speak and act in their own languages, preserve their ancestral knowledge, and connect their local struggles with global movements for the rights and justice of Indigenous Peoples.
