On Thursday, November 27, 2025, Maya women from different places came together: Ixil women in Tuscarawas County, (Maya Ixil) Virginia, and (Maya Mam( Guatemala. Our gathering was a space to honour the sacred lands and remember the first inhabitants of Turtle Island (U.S.).

During our conversation, we reflected on the difficult experiences our communities face. We spoke about the case of Margarita Asicona (Ixil Maya), who endured an unjust legal process in Florida (2025). We also discussed the situation of a K’iche’ Maya woman in Tuscarawas (Ohio, U.S.) who, when taking her baby to the local children’s clinic, could only receive care thanks to the support of Comunidad Sol and the clinic doctor, since the system did not have a K’iche’ interpreter (2025). These are just a few of the cases documented by Comunidad Sol.

In our meeting, we also reflected on our identity as Maya women: we wear our traditional clothing and speak our language, but we do not know our history, rights and noticed that our children often do not. There is pressure to assimilate: the more they adopt “English” names, clothing, or language, the more socially accepted they become. However, we realised that this should not be the case. It is our responsibility, as women, to be transmitters of our identity, language, and traditional clothing, as acts of resistance.

For this, it is necessary that we, as women, engage in dialogue to heal and rebuild our future. Therefore, we will continue our women-to-women conversations, strengthening our community and cultural heritage, remembering that our identity is a right we must protect and share.

Tuscarawas, Ohio, U.S. 2025
